This update allows ChatGPT to remember details from previous conversations and tailor its future responses accordingly. According to an OpenAI blog post, ChatGPT will build memories on its own over time, though users can also prompt the bot to remember specific details — or forget them. The feature is also still exclusive to ChatGPT users who have a Plus, Team, Enterprise or Education plan. Through the partnership, ChatGPT users will be able to find products sold by Walmart and complete entire purchases without leaving the chatbot’s interface.
This is used to not only help the model determine the best output, but it also helps improve the training process, enabling it to answer questions more effectively. Here’s how it works, its use cases, how to access it, its limitations, notable updates and future outlook. Released in February 2025, GPT-4.5 was described by Altman as a “giant, expensive model”. In March 2023, a bug allowed some users to see the titles of other users’ conversations. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said that users were unable to see the contents of the conversations.

In August 2024, the FTC voted unanimously to ban marketers from using fake user reviews created by generative AI chatbots (including ChatGPT) and influencers paying for bots to increase follower counts. These limitations may be revealed when ChatGPT responds to prompts including descriptors of people. In one instance, ChatGPT generated a rap in which women and scientists of color were asserted to be inferior to white male scientists. GPT-4, which was released on March 14, 2023, was made available via API and for premium ChatGPT users.

The Pro launch coincided with the release of the o1 model, providing unlimited access to o1 and advanced voice mode. Users interact with ChatGPT through conversations which consist of text, audio, and image inputs and outputs. They can explicitly tell ChatGPT to remember aspects of the conversation, and ChatGPT can use these details in future conversations. Apart from models, there are modes and tools in ChatGPT that allow you to go beyond basic chatting. There’s even a Projects feature that keeps all your chats organized, plus a Library to manage all your generated images. OpenAI announces the release of its o1 model, which demonstrates complex reasoning capabilities.
Similar to a phone’s auto-complete feature, ChatGPT uses a prediction model to guess the most likely next word based on the context it has been provided. ChatGPT Team lets companies create shared workspaces with settings that apply to all users, as well as the ability to share proprietary data sets. OpenAI initially releases this feature Spinando casino to users who pay for the Plus, Team or Enterprise plan. OpenAI announces the ChatGPT Pro plan, a new premium plan for ChatGPT users to access even more features.
AI agents represent stage three of AGI, enhancing ChatGPT’s reasoning abilities and enabling it to complete a broader range of tasks without human assistance. For example, ChatGPT will offer hints, organize content into sections and create custom lessons and quizzes instead of providing a direct answer to students. According to OpenAI, study mode is powered by custom system instructions written in collaboration with teachers, scientists and educational experts. And, because the model is able to produce incorrect information in such an eloquent way, the fallacies are hard to spot and control. This often leads to what experts call “hallucinations,” where the output generated is stylistically correct, but factually wrong. Instead of a list of websites, though, it’ll provide users with a simple list of answers.

Some, including Nature and JAMA Network, “require that authors disclose the use of text-generating tools and ban listing a large language model (LLM) such as ChatGPT as a co-author”. As of July 2025, Science expects authors to release in full how AI-generated content is used and made in their work. In late March 2023, the Italian data protection authority banned ChatGPT in Italy and opened an investigation.

Stanford researchers reported that GPT-4 “passes a rigorous Turing test, diverging from average human behavior chiefly to be more cooperative.” The company announced a slew of generative AI-powered features to counter OpenAI and Microsoft. GPT-5 was launched on August 7, 2025, and is publicly accessible through ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, and via OpenAI’s API.
